Prison

Τo 1947, εν μέσω εμφυλίου πολέμου, την πρώτη κιόλας χρονιά άφιξης πολιτικών κρατουμένων ξεκινά και η ανέγερση των φυλακών και των υπόλοιπων κτιρίων: του εργοστασίου παραγωγής ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας, του αναρρωτηρίου, της αποθήκης, των φυλακίων και των πυροβολείων. Όλες οι οικοδομικές εργασίες έγιναν από καταναγκαστική εργασία των ίδιων των κρατουμένων. Οι ίδιοι έκαναν τους εκβραχισμούς, το σπάσιμο και τη μεταφορά πέτρας και οικοδομικού υλικού, την τοποθέτηση συρματοπλεγμάτων, τη διάνοιξη των δρόμων.

In 1947, in the midst of civil war, in the very first year that political prisoners arrived in Gyaros, the construction of the prisons and the rest of the buildings begins: the power plant, the infirmary, the warehouse, the outposts and the artillery. All construction work was done by the forced labour of the prisoners themselves. They themselves did the excavating, the breaking and transporting of the stones and building material, the laying of barbed wire, the opening of the roads.
